Job Description
The Opportunity
An established construction and engineering business is looking for an experienced Diesel Fitter / Heavy Plant Mechanic with a strong track record working on heavy mobile plant and specialised construction machinery.
This opportunity is suited to a hands-on tradesperson who can demonstrate genuine experience in diagnosing faults, maintaining complex equipment and responding confidently to breakdowns. You’ll work with a varied fleet across workshop maintenance and field-service environments, giving you exposure to specialised machinery and challenging mechanical work.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing across heavy plant and construction equipment
- Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out effective repairs
- Troubleshoot hydraulic systems and identify component or system failures
- Carry out electrical fault finding associated with mobile plant
- Service and repair excavators, cranes, piling rigs and other specialised construction equipment
- Respond to equipment breakdowns at worksites and complete field repairs
- Inspect machinery to identify faults, wear, damage and maintenance requirements
- Remove, repair and replace mechanical and hydraulic components
- Complete repairs efficiently while maintaining high safety standards
- Maintain detailed service, repair and inspection records
- Prepare equipment for safe and reliable operation
- Use appropriate diagnostic and testing equipment when required
- Work independently during field-service assignments and breakdown call-outs
- Communicate equipment faults, repair requirements and maintenance outcomes clearly
- Follow company safety procedures and industry standards at all times
Requirements & Eligibility
- Recognised trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter, Heavy Plant Mechanic, Mobile Plant Mechanic or equivalent
- Demonstrated professional experience maintaining heavy mobile plant or construction equipment
- Practical experience working with excavators, cranes, piling equipment, earthmoving machinery or comparable plant
- Strong mechanical diagnostic and repair capability
- Proven hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience
- Experience responding to breakdowns and performing field-service repairs
- Ability to identify faults and complete repairs independently
- Ability to work effectively in both workshop and onsite environments
- Current Australian driver's licence or relevant ability to obtain one
- Strong safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices
- Reliable and self-motivated approach to mechanical work
- Ability to work autonomously during site-based assignments
- Experience with CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, Liebherr, Tadano, Grove, Franna, Terex or similar equipment is advantageous
