Fitter Welder

A well-established engineering business in Canterbury, New Zealand is looking for an experienced Fitter-Welder who can demonstrate strong hands-on fabrication, fitting and welding capability. This role is suited to someone whose practical skills, employment history and technical experience can be clearly verified and matched to the demands of a busy engineering workshop.

You’ll work across a varied range of projects, from custom truck and transport fabrication to crane fit-outs, trailers, repairs and general engineering. Some jobs will follow detailed drawings; others will require you to assess the situation, plan the fabrication and find a practical solution on the workshop floor.

• Fabricate and fit custom truck decks and transport components
• Complete crane fit-outs and associated structural fabrication
• Carry out MIG and TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
• Measure, cut, prepare and assemble fabricated components
• Complete accurate fit-up and mechanical assembly work
• Interpret engineering drawings, plans and workshop specifications
• Assess fabrication requirements and develop practical solutions when drawings are unavailable
• Carry out truck, transport and general engineering repairs
• Complete urgent and time-sensitive repair work while maintaining quality standards
• Inspect completed fabrication and welding work for accuracy and finish
• Work to required engineering and certification standards
• Coordinate with certified engineers for inspection and sign-off
• Maintain safe working practices throughout fabrication and workshop activities
• Keep tools, equipment and the workshop area organised and in good working condition

• Minimum 5 years of recent experience as a Fitter-Welder, Fabricator or closely related trade
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in professional fabrication environments
• Confident MIG and TIG welding ability
• Experience welding mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
• Strong fabrication, fitting and assembly skills
• Ability to read and work from technical or engineering drawings
• Ability to independently assess dimensions, materials and fabrication requirements
• Strong practical problem-solving ability
• Consistent attention to accuracy, finish and workmanship
• Experience with trucks, transport equipment or truck-body fabrication is advantageous
• Formal welding tickets or trade certifications are advantageous but not essential
• Willingness to complete relevant welding certifications where required
• Ability to provide verifiable evidence of relevant skills and employment experience
• Strong safety awareness and professional work standards
