The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Head Chef to lead a large-scale hospitality operation in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, New Zealand. This is a permanent full-time leadership opportunity within a fast-paced environment delivering high-quality food services, including daily meal production, corporate catering, and special events.
This role offers the opportunity to manage all aspects of kitchen operations while leading and developing a skilled culinary team. You will be responsible for maintaining exceptional food quality, safety, and operational standards while working with modern commercial kitchen equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all kitchen operations
- Plan, develop, cost, and deliver high-quality menus
- Maintain food safety, hygiene, and compliance standards
- Supervise, coach, and develop kitchen staff
- Manage kitchen rosters and daily operations
- Monitor productivity, food costs, and kitchen performance
- Prepare and oversee catering for functions and special events
- Ensure dietary, allergy, and cultural food requirements are met
- Maintain high presentation and quality standards
- Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and inventory control
- Operate efficiently in a fast-paced commercial kitchen
- Drive continuous improvement and maintain industry best practices
Requirements & Eligibility
- NZQA Level 4 Cookery qualification or equivalent
- Food Handling Certificate or equivalent food safety qualification
- Minimum 4 years of experience as a Head Chef, Sous Chef, or similar leadership role
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Experience managing high-volume commercial kitchen operations
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure
- Excellent menu planning and food costing knowledge
- Strong understanding of food safety and hygiene regulations
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Reliable, professional, and quality-focused approach
- Ability to obtain satisfactory police and security clearances if required
