Marine Technician

A leading marine service business in New Zealand is seeking an experienced Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic to join its established technical team.

This opportunity is designed for skilled technicians whose practical experience can be clearly demonstrated and verified. You’ll work on a diverse range of marine engines and systems, applying your mechanical, diagnostic and electrical expertise in a professional workshop environment as well as on customer vessels and mobile service jobs.

The role offers full-time permanent employment with a minimum of 40 guaranteed hours per week, exposure to recognised marine technologies and opportunities for continued technical development and manufacturer training.

Candidates with strong experience across outboard engines, marine diagnostics, engine servicing and marine electrical systems are encouraged to apply. Experience with Mercury, MerCruiser, SmartCraft or DTS systems will be highly regarded.

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling-system faults across marine engines
• Carry out servicing, preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on outboard and marine engines
• Inspect, dismantle, repair and accurately reassemble engine components
• Identify worn or defective components and complete replacements in accordance with manufacturer specifications
• Perform engine tune-ups, testing and performance checks
• Use computerised diagnostic equipment and manufacturer software to identify and resolve technical faults
• Diagnose and repair marine starting, charging and electrical systems
• Service and repair sterndrive and inboard marine systems when required
• Install outboard engines, controls, gauges, wiring and related equipment
• Install marine electronics, accessories and associated systems
• Complete pre-delivery inspections and engine commissioning
• Participate in sea trials and operational testing
• Provide mobile servicing and repairs at customer locations when required
• Maintain accurate technical records and service documentation
• Follow workplace health and safety procedures and manufacturer guidelines
• Maintain a high standard of workmanship across all repairs and installations
• Work independently while contributing effectively to the wider technical team

• Relevant NZQF Level 4 trade qualification or an equivalent overseas qualification
• Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working with internal-combustion engines
• Demonstrated practical experience with outboard or marine engines
• Strong ability to diagnose engine faults and complete mechanical repairs
• Proven experience with servicing, component replacement and engine reassembly
• Practical understanding of marine electrical and charging systems
• Experience with computerised diagnostic equipment and technical service software
• Mercury outboard or MerCruiser experience is highly advantageous
• Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
• Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
• Ability to interpret technical manuals and manufacturer specifications
• Ability to work safely with minimal supervision
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to professional workmanship
• Ability to work effectively within an experienced technical team
• Full driver’s licence is preferred
• Must satisfy applicable New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
